The volume of rail cargo transportation in Latvia in the first six months of this year decreased by 21.1% compared to the same period in 2023 and amounted to 6.109 million tons, according to data from the Ministry of Transport. The volume of international transportation amounted to 5.349 million tons (-24%), and domestic transportation increased by 7.8% to 760 thousand tons. The volume of transit cargo for the six months of this year amounted to 4.538 million tons (-29.5%), including transit of railway cargo through ports – 4.077 million tons (29.5%), and land transit through the territory of Latvia – 461 thousand tons (+1.8%). Export transportation during this period amounted to 1.008 million tons (49.3% less), import transportation – 3.88 million tons (-15.7%). In 2023, the volume of rail freight transportation in Latvia decreased by 27.6% compared to 2022 and amounted to 15.636 million tons.
