Production of hydrogen-based fertilizers. Yara opened a factory

Produkcja nawozów na bazie wodoru. Yara otworzyła fabrykę

“This is a milestone for Yara and the decarbonization of the value chain of food, marine fuels and other energy-intensive industries,” says Svein Tore Holsether, president and CEO of Yara, in a press release.

The plant was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre. It uses 24 MW of renewable hydrogen at Herøya Industrial Park, the largest power plant of its type currently operating in Europe. Hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water and renewable energy, replacing natural gas as a raw material and reducing the plant's CO2 emissions by 41,000 tons every year.

New Yara investment

– This is a groundbreaking project and testimony to our mission to responsibly feed the world and protect the planet. I want to thank our dedicated employees who have worked tirelessly to bring this cutting-edge production to life, Enova for supporting the project, our partners and our brave customers who are the first to invest in a more sustainable future. We are very pleased to have delivered the first tons of low-carbon fertilizers to Lantmännen, a partnership that is a concrete example of cooperation around the world. The entire food value chain requires decarbonization. Together, we have taken this important step towards decarbonizing sectors where it is difficult to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, says Holsether.

The low carbon footprint fertilizers produced and delivered will be part of a new portfolio called Yara Climate Choice.

– These solutions will benefit crops while contributing to decarbonizing the food value chain and reducing climate impact. In addition to fertilizers produced through water electrolysis and renewable energy, a large part of Yara's future portfolio will be low-emission ammonia-based fertilizers produced using carbon dioxide capture (CCS) technology, the press release said.

– Renewable ammonia is an important part of the decarbonization puzzle, but it takes time to develop on a large scale. As the world rapidly approaches 2030, we are also working to produce low-emission ammonia using CCS technology to enable a hydrogen economy and the development of emerging markets for low-emission ammonia, says Hans Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia.

Decarbonization of fertilizer production

In 2023, Yara signed a binding CO2 transport and storage agreement with Northern Lights, representing the world's first binding cross-border CCS agreement. Yara's goal is to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 800,000 tonnes resulting from ammonia production at Yara Sluiskil.

– The world must act urgently on many fronts to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, and CCS is a key step towards rapid and cost-effective decarbonization. The ecological transition will require investment, predictable framework conditions, massive expansion of renewable energy sources and the energy grid, constantly evolving technology and a maturing market in which demand and supply are developing simultaneously. Companies that take this seriously will gain a competitive advantage. At Yara, we have already reduced emissions by 45 percent since 2005, and with our strategy to profitably deliver low carbon solutions at scale and quickly, produced using both renewable energy and CCS, we are uniquely positioned to deliver to shareholders, customers, employees alike , as well as to society as a whole, says Holsether.
