– A small exchange, which shows the general mood, indicates the approaching autumn. This period is usually characterized by greater meat consumption, and consequently larger orders. The ISW session, where small plants usually supply, ended with a full sale of the exhibited animals. However, the average price did not change and amounted to 2.06 euros. Were exhibitors too afraid of increasing prices, which was taken advantage of by buyers, or maybe it is simply the status quo? Maybe we will find the answer at the VEZG session? There, the price did not change, but the range considered fluctuated between 2.00-2.05 euros per kg, so the current value is the minimum that both parties were able to agree to. Are we therefore expecting increases? In my opinion, no – writes the Polsus spokesman in his analysis.

After drastic reductions, prices of fattened pigs have stabilized
Stabilization instead of decline?
Czarniak pointed to the weak position of the industry – not only of breeders, but also of processors in negotiations with retail chains:
– From what I have gathered, people are not willing to pay more for the raw material. So, the market seems to be stabilizing. This solution is also good, because it allows planning. It is known that those who bought expensive piglets are very nervous that they may not make money on a given batch, but in this case, a stable price at a certain level is better than a swing that can greatly deplete finances. I would also like the price to be higher, but at the moment there is no indication that this will happen – the breeder comments.
Colossal losses due to ASF
The Polsus spokesman also commented on the situation related to ASF in Poland:
– It is no longer just about herds being culled due to the detection of the virus, but also about creating infected zones that block sales for 30 days. Suspending such sales several times not only limits the supply of fattened pigs on the market, but is above all a financial threat to the breeders themselves. Yes, the main vector of the disease is wild boar and this virus should be eliminated from the environment as much as possible (for example by collecting carrion with trained dogs and limiting the population of wild boar), but another barrier that is supposed to protect our herds is biosecurity! Let's make sure ourselves and other breeders follow these rules, because it is in our interest – Czaniak writes in his commentary.

The tragedy of pig farmers in the Gniezno district continues. "Nobody is counting losses anymore"
The expert also referred to the negative social attitude towards the taming of wild boars by city dwellers (and not only them):
– They often feed wild pigs, even giving them names, not realizing that these are wild animals that can attack when threatened, and are also a vector of a virus that is dangerous to the economy! Yes, ASF does not directly threaten people, but its effects are causing the gradual death of an entire sector of the economy, which is pork breeding and processing – the expert sums up.
