In the storage of cereal grain, as in many other issues, prevention is of great importance, and in this case, appropriate preparation for storing both the grain and the warehouse. Spending a little time and effort before you start storing will help you avoid problems in the future.

Clean grain is the basis
In the case of grain, prevention means taking care of the quality of threshing, as well as humidity and temperature. The quality of threshing should be understood as thorough cleaning of the combine harvester after the previous season and its setting so that as little chaff, seeds and parts of green weeds as well as damaged grains enter the tank. Each of these elements contributes to an increase in grain moisture during storage and, as a result, supports the development of fungi, which are definitely not desirable in a grain warehouse.

Beware of counterfeit grain moisture meters. We check how sellers mislead
If the combine harvester setting was unsuccessful, it is worth opting for grain cleaning. Even the simplest blower will be helpful here, although on a larger scale it is better to choose a professional cleaning facility, which will also allow you to separate dirt that is more difficult to remove. Coming back to the above-mentioned humidity, in the case of storage for up to half a year it should not exceed 14-14.5%, while for a longer period a safer value will be 13%. As the humidity is often slightly higher when harvesting cereals, it is necessary to reduce it, and it is worth adding that in the case of cereals there is often no need for a drying room, but ventilating the grain with a large amount of air is enough. Of course, when determining humidity, you should use a humidity meter and make several tests in different places to obtain a reliable result.
A clean and tight grain warehouse
When it comes to preparing the warehouse, first of all it must be clean and isolate the grain from external factors. In the case of silos, the matter is quite simple, as their design is rather well-thought-out and prepared from start to finish for storing agricultural produce. The matter may be slightly more complicated in the case of flat warehouses, especially those improvised ones, adapted for storing grain. In such places, special attention should be paid to the tightness of the roof, doors and windows, as well as possible water seepage through the floor. Unfortunately, even small leaks can cause serious problems, but at the same time you cannot forget about proper ventilation.

Harvest 2024. There has not been such a difference in quality and yield for years
Regardless of the type of warehouse, maintaining cleanliness is crucial. Before the new season, the warehouse should be cleaned and gassed, removing the remains of last year's grain and killing pests. To remove grain, pest eggs, etc., an ordinary broom or blower is often enough, while gassing is carried out using tablets that release phosphine or using the services of a specialist company.
