Power outages hit Ukrainian poultry sector

As reported by Poultry World, citing Time Magazine, Ukraine is currently suffering from one of its worst power outages. It was found that Russia has cut off about 60 percent of its generating capacity. This has resulted in cyclical power outages throughout the country.

Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK, which has lost 90 percent of its generating capacity, warned of a potential worsening of the situation in winter, with power outages expected to last up to 20 hours a day

– it was stated.

Serhiy Karpenko, executive director of the Ukrainian Poultry Breeders Association, was quoted by Poultry World as saying that power outages are undermining the viability of the Ukrainian poultry sector.

Poultry farms are without centralized electricity for an average of 7-10 hours per day. Some operations are limited to just 4-10 hours per day.

Ad hoc solutions will not save the Ukrainian poultry sector

The portal reported that many companies have started using backup power. However, power outages are painful for the entire sector. Using backup power, such as diesel generators, significantly increases production costs.

Incubation and subsequent rearing of young laying hens require strict adherence to technological standards for keeping poultry for 4 months, which cannot be achieved without ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply

– Karpenko stated.

The entire poultry sector is suffering, regardless of the stage of production

A steady supply of electricity is essential at all stages of the production chain, from breeding to slaughter, processing and storage. And the feed sector also suffers from power outages.

Feed milling equipment requires constant voltage to start, maintain and ensure all related feed production processes in accordance with applicable standards, which diesel generators simply cannot provide. The inability to produce feed is fraught with the inevitable loss of poultry

– Karpenko said.

Power outages also put pressure on trade and storage. Keeping poultry carcasses requires a specific temperature and other conditions that cannot be maintained without a constant supply of power.

Do Ukrainian problems mean an opportunity for the Polish poultry sector?

Instinctively, one can assume that the problems in Ukraine are an opportunity for the Polish poultry sector. After all, our breeders compete with Ukrainians on the European market. At the same time, production costs are lower in Ukraine on many levels.

However, this does not immediately mean that it will translate into higher sales results for Polish producers.

Brazil and Thailand are also major players on the market. Both countries have a major influence on the European market. Therefore, it is not possible to consider only Ukraine in the entire context of the poultry sector.
