Investing in an agricultural biogas plant is not a good and profitable solution for every farm. Why?

The starting point determining the profitability of investing in an agricultural biogas plant is the availability of a substrate base. If a farm is able to produce its own substrate to meet the year-round demand necessary for the operation of a biogas plant, we are already halfway successful – emphasizes Dr. Eng. Adam Świętochowski, Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Biosystems Engineering at SGGW.

How quickly will the investment in an agricultural biogas plant pay off?

An expert from WULS-SGGW indicates that another element that determines the possibility of implementing a biogas plant on a farm are investment costs. And at this point one very important thing should be noted. The unit cost of building a small biogas plant will always be higher than in the case of large biogas plants.

Therefore, farmers will also need additional support to implement such an expensive renewable energy investment. For this purpose, government programs are launched, such as Energy for the countryside or Agroenergy, thanks to which they can obtain additional funding or a preferential loan for the implementation of this type of investment. Farmers can usually expect a government return on investment costs in biogas plants of 50-60%, thanks to which the payback period is shortened from a dozen to approximately 6 – 8 years – sums up Dr. Eng. Adam Świętochowski, Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Biosystems Engineering at SGGW.
