A pile of straw caught fire on August 17 in a field on a farm in the Gniewkowo commune. 900 bales of straw and two tarpaulins were burned. The owner estimated the losses at over PLN 71,000.
The police determined that the fire was the work of an arsonist. A 45-year-old resident of the Rojewo commune, who had recently returned from abroad, was linked to the man. It was known that the man had made threats against the owner of the farm.
The 45-year-old was located and detained by police officers at the train station in Gniewkowo. The suspect was charged with damaging property by starting a fire and using criminal threats. Investigators determined that he set fire to straw in the field out of anger at the farmer. He now faces a sentence of 5 years in prison for this. The prosecutor's office placed the suspect under police supervision. He is also banned from approaching the injured party and from leaving the country.
