The disease was confirmed in the town of Wężówko, the Budry commune, which administratively belongs to the Węgorzewo poviat. This is an area covered by the red zone, which is a consequence of two pig ASF outbreaks that appeared last year in the neighboring Banie Mazurskie commune. Importantly, more than 12 months have passed since these outbreaks occurred and the abolition of the zone in this region could be expected any day now. Unfortunately, the last outbreak put an end to these plans.

This is the seventh ASF outbreak confirmed this year in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, however, all herds infected with the plague so far were located in the south-western part of the region – in the Nowe Miasto poviat (5 outbreaks) and Iława poviat (1 outbreak).

Since the beginning of the year, 35 outbreaks of African swine fever have been confirmed in pig herds throughout Poland. 22 of them occurred in Greater Poland.
