Temporary work optimizes costs in the company

The logistics industry expressed the greatest interest in employing casual workers – exactly 2/3 of enterprises in this sector (66%), 6.pp more than in Q2, plan to use temporary work to the same or greater extent. In turn, 27% of companies reported a higher demand for casual workers than three months ago – previously it was 21%. The needs in this area are growing, but meeting them may be problematic considering the number of people planning to take up part-time work this quarter.

Trade wants to increase employment

The largest increase in the potential number of employees, resulting from plans to use support for casual work, was recorded in the trade industry. Today, 62% of this type of enterprises want to employ temporary workers – in the last edition of the indicator, exactly half of commercial companies reported such an intention, which is an increase of 12 percentage points.

It is the commercial sector that is planning to increase the number of casual workers to the greatest extent. Nearly every third (32%) company in this industry will increase their employment. For logistics, this percentage was 28%, for the production industry it was 21%.

– The clearly higher trade demand for occasional work is understandable this quarter, taking into account the holiday season and staff shortages in stores. Especially those located in popular tourist destinations, where the number of customers often increases rapidly and the permanent staff is unable to cope with the increased traffic. In general, the percentage of companies that intend to employ a larger number of temporary workers is quite high in this edition of the indicator, which is probably also due to the fact that we are dealing with the holiday season – explains Krzysztof Trębski, member of the Tikrow management board.

Production has fewer needs

In the case of the manufacturing industry, the demand for temporary work has decreased compared to the previous edition of the indicator, although it still remains at a quite high level. 56% of companies in this sector plan to employ casual workers this quarter – previously 66%.

According to the Q3 Casual Work Index, only 11% plan to employ fewer casual workers than before, while 18% admitted that they do not plan to use this type of support at all.

Motivations, costs and seasonality

Costs again turned out to be the main factor determining the search for temporary workers – 41% of companies indicated them. Secondly, enterprises explained the need for their support with a seasonal increase in orders (36%). For 34% of companies, such a personnel strategy results from difficulties in recruiting blue-collar workers or workers who do not require specialized competences, while 32% of respondents drew attention to difficulties related to employee absenteeism. It is also worth adding that one in five companies will invite temporary workers, justifying this decision with the desire to try a flexible employment model.

– We expect that there will be more and more companies testing this form of employment. Not only due to problems with staff shortages, but also because the community of employees willing to work flexibly is constantly growing and therefore more companies, also in areas where casual work was not so popular, have the opportunity to test the real potential of such support – comments Krzysztof Trębski from Tikrow.

Students are the main force

However, to what extent will temporary workers themselves respond to the expectations and needs of enterprises? In the third quarter of 2024, 16% of respondents intend to look for additional work orders – this is a decrease of 1 percentage point compared to the last edition of the Casual Work Index. 62% of respondents do not have such plans, while 22% remain undecided on this issue, marking the answer "difficult to say".

The vast majority of casual work orders will be answered by pupils or students aged 18 to 24. As many as 43% of respondents in the group with this professional status expressed their willingness to look for temporary work, as did 41% of respondents from this age category. In the case of people aged 25 to 34, the willingness to undertake the so-called "day labor" was expressed by one fourth of the respondents. Nearly every third unemployed person (30%) will also look for orders. Among people employed under an employment contract, we identified 18% of those who intend to earn extra money through casual work orders. We also noticed a clear relationship between the size of households and the interest in orders – if they were inhabited by 5 or more people, 30% were willing to work temporarily – and if they had 2 people – 12%, and 3 – 19%.

The decision to carry out temporary work orders is most often determined by the need to obtain money for additional expenses (57%) and high prices and maintenance costs (42%). – Let us also note that for almost every fourth person it is important to gain professional experience in various industries and in various positions, while in the 18-24 age group, as many as 40% of respondents pay attention to this aspect and for these respondents it is a more important reason than the need. facing the high prices of everyday life. – This proves the existence of a strong trend of the so-called multiworking, according to which temporary workers gain multi-industry experience thanks to assignments and move more efficiently on the labor market. Moreover, our community already numbers a quarter of a million people and I believe that it will largely respond to the demand for temporary work compared to the relatively small overall number of people planning to undertake this type of work this quarter – says Krzysztof Trębski from Tikrow.

An interesting and at the same time somewhat surprising conclusion is related to the motivations to perform occasional work depending on the place of residence. As it turns out, high prices and costs of everyday life and maintenance are the key reason for carrying out temporary work orders for as many as 59% of people living in medium-sized cities (from 20,000 to 99,000 inhabitants). In the case of large cities (from 100 to 500 thousand), this answer received less, because 51% of the votes, and in the category of large cities (over 500,000), even less, because 46%.
