On November 8, the first reading of the Left’s parliamentary project introducing a ban on trading on Christmas Eve will take place in the Sejm. The Polish Organization of Trade and Distribution is calling for the possibility of sales on that day to be maintained this year, while proposing a change for subsequent years.
POHiD’s appeal to parliamentary clubs regarding the ban on trading on Christmas Eve
The trade industry is preparing for the pre-Christmas period several months in advance. To be able to respond to their needs, traders have ordered huge volumes of goods from home and abroad much earlier. More deliveries for Christmas are also in the pipeline. In warehouses and distribution centers, work is being fully organized. Employee schedules have long since been established.
– The situation shows that the proposal submitted by the Left to ban trading on Christmas Eve was presented far too late, comments Renata Juszkiewicz, CEO of POHiD. – If it comes into force, the trade industry will suffer huge losses from wasted food, as well as organizational, personnel and logistical difficulties. It will also translate into inconvenience for customers who visit stores every year up to and including December 24. On that day, trade operates until 2pm at the latest.
What does POHID propose regarding Christmas Eve?
POHiD therefore calls for Christmas Eve to remain a trading day this year. At the same time, we declare our willingness to dialogue on the issue in subsequent years, proposing a compromise in the form of an additional trading Sunday in December, so as to obtain 3 trading Sundays before Christmas.
