A survey of

public opinion, conducted in mid December at the Commission of the State

Chancery, showed that the people’s trust in the Riigikogu and the government is gradually being restored. Support for the need for tax changes and the transition to Estonian-language education has not changed compared with the autumn,

as has and the proportion of people experiencing economic difficulties.

According to a study conducted by the Turu-uuringute AS, in which 1260 Estonian people over 15 years old took part, Riigikogu

is trusted 33% of surveyors, and the government -39%. In September these indicators were 27% and 32% respectively.

Support for transition to Estonian-language education remains high: 71% of people think this will create equal opportunities for all children in Estonia to receive quality education. Without substantial changes the support of the separation of the Estonian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate – this initiative is supported by 59% of people.

A majority of surveyed (63%) also are in favor ofdepriving Russian and Belarusian citizens of the right to vote in local elections, while among other nationalities 72% believe that this right should be preserved.

Membership in NATO and the European Union is still highly valued. 93% of Estonians and 42% of other nationalities support membership in NATO. Membership in the European Union is important for 85% of Estonians and 63% of other nationalities.

According to data from the Department of Statistics, the increase in prices in the last months has been low, which is probably, contributes to stability of the population’s perception of its economic wealth compared with September. The proportion of people that consider themselves in an economically difficult situation is 31% (same level as in September). Support for the need for tax changes also remained practically unchanged: 36% against the change (in September – 37%), opposing 59%.

Possibly because of the tax changes in January the economic uncertainty is slightly increased – 59% in December compared with 51% in September. Also, the general level of satisfaction with life decreased: from 66% in September to 60% in December.

Feeling of other nationalities has decreased from 68% in June to 59% in December, though for 79% this is still an important value.
