Repairs to the EstLink 2 submarine power cable between Estonia and Finland, which was damaged in January, will be completed no later than September 12. EstLink 2 will begin operations on September 13, according to a statement from Estonian electricity and gas network operator Elering.

"Just this weekend, we completed one of the two joints connecting the spare cable section and the existing EstLink 2 cables at sea and onshore. The completion of the first critical joint ensures that we will complete another similar connection next month, after which we will resume EstLink 2 testing and civil works," said Elering board member Reigo Kebja.

This week begins with laying the cable in a trench, i.e. in a permanent place. Then the constructed repair platform will be dismantled.

The platform built at sea for the repair of EstLink 2 is several thousand square meters in size, and a breakwater was built to protect it. A repair area of about 400 square meters was built on the drained section of the sea to safely carry out repair work. A tower crane was installed to deliver construction materials and equipment to the construction site.

As previously reported, the cable malfunction occurred on the night of January 26. The exact location of the accident was determined at the end of February. An investigation showed that the malfunction was not caused by external factors.

EstLink 2 consists of converter stations in Estonia and Finland and a direct current line with a length of over 170 kilometers, about 12 kilometers of which runs as a land cable in Estonia, almost 147 kilometers as a sea cable along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, and about 14 kilometers as an overhead line in Finland. The cable capacity is 658 MW.
