NikeTown London, the sporting giant’s iconic flagship store on Oxford Street, has temporarily closed its doors as it gears up for a “grand reopening”.
In a statement on Linkedin, Nike UK director of stores Charmain Mason said: “As we temporarily bid farewell to NikeTown London, a sporting sanctuary of inspiration for the past 25 years, I can’t help but reflect on the countless and extraordinary, events, achievements, sporting superstars, customers it has hosted or brought to life.
“Each milestone, each victory, was crafted by the incredibly gifted individuals who have graced its floors or masterminded its incomparable operations with their talent and passion.
“But I fear not, for NikeTown is not truly departing. She will return, more magnificent, more daring, and as inspiring as ever. Until her grand reopening, l’ll be carrying her spirit with me – ahh swoosh!”
The store, which first opened to much fanfare back in July 1999, has been a central hub for the sporting giant in the UK for over 25 years.
NikeTown London is famous for being the largest of the retailer’s global flagship stores, offering an array of sports apparel and footwear covering four floors.
Earlier this month, the business said it would be closing its factory store at Craigleith Retail Park, Edinburgh, with 30 workers affected.
The outlet, which sells a discounted range of Nike athletic footwear, apparel and accessories, is shutting amid claims that it was unable to agree a new lease with its landlord.
A spokesperson for Nike said: “We constantly evaluate our store locations to give us the best opportunity to personally connect with consumers through premium products, experiences, and services.
“As part of this retail strategy, the Nike Craigleith Store will close [on] 26 January.”
The closures comes as Nike looks to revive its poor sales slump, with help from its new CEO Elliot, who replaced John Donahoe as the brand’s president and chief executive last year.
Hill previously worked at the American sportswear giant for 32 years in senior leadership roles across North America and Europe.
Nike has been contacted for comment.
