The local portal piotrkowski24.pl wrote about the case. The case concerns a farm located in the town of Grabina Wola in the Czarnocin commune (northern part of Piotrków County). Last Friday, the local veterinary services were notified by one of the residents about suspected irregularities.
Unfortunately, this information was confirmed. We found 8 dead sows in farrowing crates in a significant state of decomposition. We also discovered 51 dead piglets, also severely decomposed. These were piglets freshly born, about 2 weeks old. The cause of this incident, and knowing the history of this farm, in our opinion, is the owner's negligence or even abandonment of these animals – said Konrad Dereń, District Veterinary Officer, in an interview with the website.
This is not the first case of animal neglect by a farmer
As it turns out, the matter has a deeper meaning. This was not the first case when the owner of the farm was accused of neglecting animals. We had a similar situation a year ago. Then the Piotrków veterinary services submitted an application to the law enforcement authorities and the then mayor to collect the neglected animals. However, the mayor then issued a negative decision and only decided to hand over the care of the herd to the owner's friend. As time has shown, this decision did not change much.
When the police and veterinary services arrived at the farm, the drunk owner of the herd left. As starvation was only the initial cause of the animals' death, actions were taken to determine whether other factors, including ASF, contributed to it.
Now the farmer is facing serious problems. If starving a herd is treated as particularly cruel abuse, he may face up to five years in prison.
