Fresh ripe bananas do not be subject to commercial quality standards applicable for import. Instead of this an obligation to mark their country of origin has been introduced.
Ripening bananas (in this yellow) in retail
- On the stage of retail sale ripening bananas:
- Not required to mark class quality.
- Must be marked by country of origin(e.g. Ecuador, Colombia).
- Should meet general requirements for labeling, in dependence on this, whether they are sold loose, or in packaging.
Principles of labeling bananas
Bananas offered for weight must be labeled with:
- Name of product (e.g. “bananas fromm. Cavendish”),
- Full name of country of origin,
- Name or name and name of manufacturer.
Bananas in packages must have:
- Name of product (e.g. “bananas fromm. Cavendish”),
- Full name of country of origin,
- Name or address of company selling,
- Mass net,
- Identification code of party producing.
Why is this important?
Thanks to new regulations consumers have confidence, from which country the bananas originate, which increases the transparency of information aboutproductsavailableonthemarket.
