Production cheaper for the second time in a row

For Dutch pig farmers, production has become cheaper for the second time in a row – starting from the peak in the 2021/2022 season. According to calculations by Wageningen University, costs decreased by an average of 8%. in the 2023/2024 season (July to June) compared to the previous marketing year. There has been a decline of 4% over the last twelve months.

According to scientists from Wageningen, in the reporting year 202320/24, pig feed prices in particular dropped by 10%. However, labor costs have increased due to inflation. The costs of manure also increased – as a result of the intensive increase in demand for it among recipients on the Dutch market.

Cost per fattening pig and sow

In detail, scientists estimated the cost of a yearling pig for fattening in the 2023/2024 season at EUR 648. The largest cost item was piglets with a share of 32%. and pigsties with almost 10 percent.

However, the share of labor costs in pig fattening is estimated at only 3%. Experts believe that the annual production costs per sow in the reporting year will amount to 1,990 euros. Of the total costs per sow, experts attributed 18 percent to the costs of building the pigsty itself.
