The growth was mainly provided by the non-food sector. Its turnover increased by 15.5 percent and amounted to 1.74 trillion rubles. The greatest growth was shown by stores selling cosmetics and perfumes, clothing, jewelry, sporting goods, and car dealerships.
“Consumer activity in this segment has recovered, large retailers have streamlined their supply systems, and the products of companies that have left the market are being replaced by domestic brands and trademarks from friendly countries,” Maria Bagreeva emphasized.
The turnover of food products also increased — the growth was 2.5 percent, to 1.73 trillion rubles. Moscow's share in the total turnover of retail trade in the country in January-June was 13.4 percent, the deputy mayor added.
The activity of buyers also manifested itself in the occupancy of Moscow shopping centers. Their attendance for the first six months of 2024 increased by 2.7 percent compared to the same period last year. In particular, the density of visitor flow in June of this year averaged 275 people per day per thousand square meters, which is five percent higher than the figure for June 2023. This is higher than in 2022, but still lower than the results of pre-pandemic 2019 – 369 people per day per thousand square meters.
The increase in traffic in 2024 will be provided mainly by small-format shopping centers – district shopping centers with an area of up to 20 thousand square meters and district shopping centers with an area of 20 to 40 thousand square meters, which are visited by an average of 630 and 490 people per day per thousand square meters, respectively.
