Morrisons cuts night shifts amid transformation efforts

Morrisons is cutting down night shifts as part of CEO Rami Baitiéh’s transformation plan.

The supermarket chain is moving towards a combination of twilight and early shifts to make its business more efficient, The Telegraph reported.

Executives said the change was not about saving money, claiming instead that the new times allowed for a better handover between shifts that improved productivity and led to fewer mistakes.

The move means that some workers will miss out on the extra £2.35 previously paid to those who work at night. Around 100 stores have made the change so far.

Employees switching from night shifts to twilight shifts will still receive night pay for several months, followed by a “half night pay premium” for two more months.

A Morrisons spokesperson told the publication that the move away from traditional night shifts was “a progressive step, delivering a better store replenishment, a better customer experience and better continuity in the store”.

“In the stores where it has been introduced, we are seeing better availability, reduced overstock, increased productivity, greater customer satisfaction and less waste. We recognise that fewer night shifts does not suit absolutely everyone, but the move is widely popular with our colleagues.”

Last week it was revealed that Morrisons would be scaling down its use of self-checkouts after Baitiéh admitted the supermarket “went a bit too far” in some stores.
