Childhood obesity is one of the most serious health challenges worldwide. Its effects are far-reaching, including both health and psychosocial problems.

“In the context of obesity prevention, proper nutrition plays a key role. Among many groups of food products, milk and its products occupy a special place. Its unique nutritional properties and the ability to support the healthy development of children can significantly contribute to maintaining proper body weight in the youngest," emphasizes the Polish Chamber of Milk.

Nutrients of milk and milk products

Milk is a source of many valuable nutrients, such as protein, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, phosphorus, magnesium and B vitamins.

“Dairy products, such as yogurts, cheeses, kefirs, and buttermilk, also provide these substances, often in an easier to digest form. Protein is necessary for the proper growth and development of a child, and calcium and vitamin D play a key role in building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth. Additionally, they support the proper functioning of the nervous and muscular systems. Vitamin A, present in milk, supports the health of the eyes and immune system, which is especially important during the period of intensive growth and development of the child," says PIM.

Regular consumption of milk helps prevent osteoporosis in later life and supports the proper development of the skeletal system in children.

The role of milk in body weight control

According to PIM, milk and milk products can support weight control in several ways:

  1. Satiety and appetite regulation: The protein in milk is one
one of the most filling macronutrients. Effectively limits
snacking and thus inhibits excessive caloric intake in subsequent meals.
  2. Low caloric value: Cow's milk, despite its nutritional value, is relatively low in calories. This is important because it provides the necessary nutrients without burdening the body with excess calories.
  3. Metabolism: Protein requires more energy to digest, which may increase the body's energy expenditure. Additionally, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D affects fat metabolism, which may contribute to reducing the risk of obesity.
  4. Healthy fats: The fats found in cow's milk, including omega-3 fatty acids, support the development of your baby's brain and nervous system. Moreover, these fats have a beneficial effect on the regulation of metabolism, which is important in the context of preventing excessive weight gain.

The impact of milk and dairy products on children's eating habits

Developing healthy eating habits from an early age is crucial to preventing obesity. Including milk and milk products in children's daily diets can contribute to a better dietary balance and at the same time teach children healthy food choices, as noted by the Chamber.

“Including milk in the daily diet helps diversify meals and provide essential nutrients, which is crucial for healthy development. Milk can be consumed on its own as an addition to breakfast cereals, cocktails, soups or other dishes, which increases its attractiveness for children and encourages regular consumption," emphasizes PIM.

It is worth remembering that healthy eating habits developed in childhood have a long-lasting impact on health and well-being in adulthood.
