By pushing through the car tax law, the coalition today demonstrated its disdain for the parliamentary opposition, the president and all residents of Estonia, emphasized Mikhail Kõlvart, chairman of the Center Party. “Over the past few months, the Center Party has repeatedly drawn attention to the fact that the car tax is contrary to the constitution. There are no benefits for low-income and large families, residents of rural areas and people with special needs. It was precisely one of these arguments – unequal treatment of people with special needs – that the president cited as the reason why he refused to proclaim the car tax law,” Kõlvart said. “Instead of throwing this law into the trash, the coalition acted extremely cynically, making the bill even worse,” Kõlvart said. – Benefits for people with special needs were completely eliminated and replaced with potential benefits. However, these benefits do not even cover the costs associated with the car tax, and people with special needs have been waiting for many years for additional support from the state for everyday expenses.” Kõlvart noted that for people with special needs, a car is often the only means of transportation, and the coalition decided to make money at their expense. “In the same way, the coalition wants to punish large families – after all, for them, the car tax will result in additional expenses. The situation of people living in rural areas will also worsen, since along with the introduction of a car tax, rural schools are closed, investment in roads is reduced to a minimum, and free public transport in the counties is abolished. The government is unable to stop the economic decline, and in order to plug holes in the budget, it is introducing a car tax, which, in essence, is a mockery of the people,” he emphasized. The Center Party sent a petition to the State Court to cancel the car tax. The State Court, in turn, noted that anyone will be able to challenge the tax assigned to them in court, demanding a review of the constitutionality of the law on the car tax. “Thus, next year, all individuals and companies who are required to pay a car tax will be able to request an opinion from the administrative court on the constitutionality of the car tax law. Considering that there are even more contradictions, we urge everyone to challenge the assigned car tax,” Kõlvart added. Read RusDelfi wherever it is convenient for you.
