A poultry processing and processing plant is to be built in Banovina, a region that is struggling with the effects of the recent earthquake. Yuri Kosiuk, owner of the Ukrainian-based MHP concern, wants to build a hundred henhouses there. He assumes that they will produce 25 million chickens per year, reports the Croatian portal Novac Jutarnji.
The investment is to be worth around 300 million euros and is called the "Petrinia project". Officially, it is being implemented by MHP subsidiaries – Perutnina Ptuj and PIPO Čakovec, owned by a Ukrainian oligarch. The hundred hen houses in total will include seven farms planned for construction, which will be located in the following towns: Letovanić, Žažina, Pešćenica, Mahovo, Popovača Otok, Brest Pokupski and Grabrovo Potok.

The plots for construction are mostly state-owned and lie in the area of four communes. The megafarm is to occupy a total area of about 5 million square meters. In addition to the hen houses, a feed factory, a hatchery, and a slaughterhouse and poultry processing plant will be built there. The investment is at the stage of geological research, geodetic arrangements and design documentation. Then environmental agreements will be necessary. However, according to the plan, construction is to start this year.
According to Tugomir Majdak, Secretary of State in the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, this is a "megaproject that every European Union member would like, but the investor chose Croatia." Jurij Kosiuk promised the Croatian authorities that at least 1,500 new jobs would be created on the farms. Local farmers who will supply grain to the plants and provide services are also expected to benefit.
Interestingly, one of the five richest Ukrainians and owner of the largest food company in the country, Yuri Kosiuk, is to invest only 20 percent of his own funds. The rest will be covered by bank loans and external funds.
