Local authorities reported that weeks of rainfall had raised water levels in nearby lagoons, causing crocodiles to seek refuge in cities.
In recent days, giant reptiles have crawled into, among others, to Tampico and the nearby towns of Ciudad Madero and Altamira. The services captured and moved at least 165 individuals outside urban areas.
The Federal Office of the Attorney General for Environmental Protection reported that about 40 more crocodiles were captured in Tamaulipas in June and relocated to habitats outside populated areas. Crocodiles are a protected species in Mexico. They rarely attack people. (PAP)
