The information will be a useful tool for manufacturers, distributors and recyclers of packaging and finished products who are ready to implement the best sustainability initiatives.
The document was developed to analyze the sustainability of various types of packaging for medicines and dietary supplements and includes a classification and description of packaging options, helping to determine the level of its functionality, the possibility and likelihood of recycling. Not only environmental aspects are taken into account, but also ease of use and preservation of the properties of goods, which is especially important for patients and buyers. A separate block of analysis was the suitability for recycling and demand for such secondary raw materials, as well as the availability of separate waste collection infrastructure.
According to the document, packaging is divided into three categories based on the "traffic light" principle. The most sustainable options are in the "green" zone, while the "yellow" zone includes those that are acceptable to use when there are no "green" analogues. It is recommended to avoid the "red" zone by switching to "green" or "yellow" alternatives.
The prepared materials contain practices and expertise of leading companies that are part of the ECR community, including Magnit. The recommendations are intended to raise awareness of the industry about recycling opportunities and motivate businesses to further develop circular economy practices, which will contribute to improving the environmental situation in the country.
"The developed recommendations are intended to systematize the existing practice of collecting packaging from medicines and dietary supplements from the population and its subsequent disposal. We hope that these recommendations will help in the development of the recycling industry for such packaging, as well as the introduction of more sustainable options for primary and secondary packaging," commented Daria Sviridenko, Head of ECR Sustainability .
Recommendations for sustainable packaging for medicines and dietary supplements are part of the Voluntary Industry Standard for Sustainable Packaging project. The project, which is being implemented with the active participation of Magnit, helps businesses understand in detail the types and materials of packaging, improve production activities and reduce the negative impact on the environment.
Last year, Magnit, together with ECR, developed recommendations for sustainable transport packaging for online commerce, and also prepared recommendations for environmentally friendly advertising materials.
