Much smaller export surplus
According to the online database of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 11.78 million tons of cereals excluding flour and semolina were sold abroad from July 2023 to June 2024. During the same period, 10.77 million tons of wheat, corn, barley and other cereals were imported, resulting in an export surplus of 1.00 million tons.
Surpluses and deficits in foreign trade in grain
The most traded commodity is wheat, which is considered the most important cereal in Germany. The export volume in question in the 2023/2024 season was 7.42 million tons, while imports amounted to 6.04 million tons. An even larger export surplus was in the case of barley, of which 3.49 million tons went abroad, while 1.63 million tons were purchased from it. Germany has a clear deficit when it comes to grain corn. In this case, exports of 404,000 tons were compared to imports of 2.94 million tons.
Germany also recorded a significant surplus in its foreign trade in flour and semolina in the 2023/2024 season. While 1.33 million tonnes of this product were exported, corresponding purchases from abroad amounted to only around 260,000 tonnes. This gives a positive balance of almost 1.1 million tonnes. The main factor was the export of wheat flour and semolina, which amounted to 1.17 million tonnes and exceeded the import volume of these products by 1.0 million tonnes.
