The ideal would be not to apply lime and manure in the same season. However, it is not that it is absolutely inadvisable. However, sometimes there is no way to wait until the next season. It is important to maintain an appropriate break between these treatments. The recommendations say 6 weeks. However, if lime and manure are to be applied to rapeseed, the situation is a bit more difficult because we do not have that much time. The necessary minimum is a break of at least 2 weeks between one application and the next. However, this is absolutely the shortest break you need to take – if possible, it is worth extending this time as much as possible.

Why do lime and manure need to be used separately?
Generally, it is not advisable to use lime with manure due to the losses associated with the loss of ammonium nitrogen. Lime in spots significantly increases the pH. When lime comes into contact with manure or is very close to it, ammonia is released very dynamically. So we have losses in nitrogen as if we had not mixed the manure with the soil at all. Additionally, we also lose organic matter, because the purpose of applying manure is, among other things, soil enrichment with organic compounds. The decomposition of matter must be spread over time, but in the case of simultaneous application of lime and manure, in practice this organic matter is burned.
What comes first: lime or manure?
Well, it is generally best to apply manure first, which is mixed into the deeper layers of the soil profile. Lime, which is applied later, remains in this system even after mixing, e.g. with a cultivating unit, in the upper layers of the soil. Provided the appropriate time interval is maintained, this treatment is both safe and fully effective. However, we know that sometimes immediately after harvest, lime is first applied to the stubble and only then fertilized with manure. In such a system, it is also necessary to maintain a grace period. At the same time, lime must be mixed with the soil after treatment. However, remember to – if possible – try to apply manure first and then lime. Both fertilizers will work in different parts of the soil in the initial stages, so we can still get the full effectiveness of both applications.
