Leviathan at FRSiH: Education, ESG reporting and the bail system as priorities for the network

Lewiatan na FRSiH: Edukacja, raportowanie ESG i system kaucyjny jako priorytety sieci

The “Green Trade in the Eye of Regulation and Increasing Requirements” debate at the Food Market and Trade Forum brought together experts to discuss growing regulatory challenges and sustainability strategies in the trade industry. Among the participants was Robert Rękas, CEO of Lewiatan Holding SA, who outlined the network’s priorities.

Lewiatan’s strategy: education and ESG reporting

Ilona Mrozowska, a journalist from PortalSpozywczy.pl, asked Robert Rękas about the effects of implementing a sustainable development strategy. The company representative explained that Lewiatan relies on the education of its business partners.

– In line with the principle of our second ESG report “Education, awareness, responsibility,” we are now focusing on the former element. Educational activities are aimed at building the right attitudes and awareness of both the costs and benefits of sustainable development,” said Rękas.

The CEO of Lewiatan Holding SA also reminded that ESG reports are created voluntarily at Lewiatan, which allows the company to meet its goals and prepare for upcoming regulations.

The company’s ESG reports are also produced on a voluntary basis.

FRSiH: Challenges of ESG reporting

Rękas highlighted the challenges of preparing ESG reports.

The reports themselves did not surprise us, but the complex structure in which we operate and the acquisition of data is breakneck. For this reason, dialogue with stakeholders has become a key element of reporting for us, to help us better understand the priorities of customers and our partners,” explained the company’s CEO.

Lewiatan’s environmental initiatives: energy-efficient store and Eco Leader ranking

Lewiatan is currently implementing the project “Energy-Efficient Store. Sustainability”, which aims to educate entrepreneurs on responsible store management. However, that’s not all – the chain motivates entrepreneurs in various ways.

– In addition, we have created an Eco Leader ranking in Leviathan, which motivates our entrepreneurs to implement ecological innovations in their stores,” added Rękas.

Bail system – solution testing stage

In the context of the upcoming entry of the bail system, a representative of Lewiatan admitted that the chain is cooperating with TOMRA Collection Poland, which is responsible for supplying recyclers to stores.

– We are implementing projects together and testing various solutions related to recycling machines. In my opinion, the bail system is not a simple subject, and it will be a real revolution in our market,” stressed Rękas.

The expert added that Leviathan plans to involve all its stores in the bail system, which is crucial from the perspective of maintaining competitiveness.

– In general, we want all our stores to operate under the bail system – we know, that the outlets that do not enter this project will lose 30% of their turnover, and this will disqualify them from the market. It is important for us now to determine which stores should have machines, and which will rely on manual collection. It is worth remembering that recyclers involve providing additional space and an additional expense, because the cost of maintaining the machines is considerable – explained Rękas.

At the end of the debate, Robert Rękas welcomed the postponement of the introduction of the deposit system, arguing that both producers and retailers are not yet ready for this step.

– In my opinion, there is a lack of dialogue and discussions in this area with entrepreneurs, who are already burdened with various regulations and administrative obligations,” Rękas added.

The debate was also a chance to discuss the issue of green trade.
