The employees of the portal tv3.lv encountered an unpleasant situation – the payment card was blocked due to suspicious transactions, but it was impossible to call the bank employees on weekends, so the planned trip to the store had to be cancelled. Swedbank recommends to always keep cash in your wallet, Rus.TVNET reports with reference to the portal tv3.lv.

Nowadays, more and more people prefer to use payment cards for daily payments, and young people especially like the opportunity to add a payment card to the virtual wallets available on their phones.

In everyday life, everyone always has a mobile phone at hand and there is no need to carry a wallet.

However, Swedbank may one day block your payment card for security reasons, promising to make a new one within five working days. But what if this happens on a weekend and you can’t call the bank?

What then? Swedbank recommends that you always keep cash in your wallet or pocket.

"Of course, this is the same reminder about the need to keep cash in reserve for unforeseen circumstances. The main thing to remember is that the bank does not block payment cards at its own whim. This is done in cases where there is a suspicion that the client's card data may end up in the possession of a third party and there is a risk that fraudsters can make a payment on behalf of the client," the bank representative said.

If at home you can simply go to the nearest bank branch and find out how to get your funds as quickly as possible, or borrow money from friends, then blocking a payment card during a trip abroad or a business trip can cause a serious headache.

When traveling abroad, using a payment card is very convenient, and you don’t need to think about exchanging currency, because with a debit card you can pay and withdraw cash almost anywhere in the world. However, if it is blocked, this option will no longer exist.

Swedbank recommends that you always consider alternative payment methods when travelling – open an additional account or use a credit card.

"One of the recommendations for travel is to take care of an alternative payment option. You can open another account and link an alternative payment card to it, but you should keep in mind that additional costs may arise. Often, customers travel with a Swedbank credit card, which automatically provides travel insurance for the duration of the trip. In this case, you can make a payment by credit card and return the funds spent immediately in the online bank/mobile application, so that no commission is charged for using the credit limit. Thus, the customer has both travel insurance and an alternative payment method if the debit card is blocked," the bank representative said.

We can never be sure how high the safety standards are maintained by the shops in the destination country or how honest the people working in those shops are.

Swedbank reminds that the seller under no circumstances has the right to ask for the buyer's card. In order to make a payment, the customer must be able to pay with the card at arm's length.
