As reports Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), the fruit processing and vegetable Spreewaldkonserve Golßen GmbH finishes with producing cucumbers from the plant in Golßen, in Dahme-Spreewald county in Brandenburg. It is one of the major suppliers of pickled cucumbers in Germany.
The company announced, that from 2026 year. production will be concentrated at the plant in Schöneiche, and the plant in Golßen will be used only for logistics and warehousing in the season of harvest. This means that in the processing house alone will remove 220 jobs. Production will continue only until end 2025 year.
The company authorities explained, that the plant in Golßen has been recovering losses because of drastic increases in production costs. They also explain the lack of development prospects, declining sales and large competition in the market due to expensive imports. Owners are promising to find solutions, so that the abandonment of cumber production would be more “socially acceptable.”
The company’s decision caused shock among residents of Golßen, because
10 percent of the men work in the cucumber processing plant, and the plant has been functioning there for 80 years –
