In his opening speech at the economic conference organized in Tallinn by the Social Democratic Party (SDPE) the leader of the organization Lauri Läänemets stressed, that the
country cannot be paused because of defense spending.
“Since we have reached the ‘military-information oasis’ that sociologists said as early as 1997 the need for investment in public defense no one disputes. But these investments should not be made at the cost of all other spheres of life. Life in the country cannot be paused. Culture cannot be paused. A situation in which the ever-increasing costs of the costs of public defense are paid for first first by the owner of the store, the educator, the lifeguard or the teacher, is neither just, nor sustainable from the point of public finance,” Laenemets noted.
Since the conference “Market economics 2.0” discusses what the market economy should be in Estonia, so many many would have to live well and achieve success, and not just the elected, Laenemets also emphasized that this cannot continue.

According to Läänemets, Estonia needs such economic system, where the wealth created reaches everyone and increases the wealth of every entrepreneur and every worker.
“Why do quite reasonable people support right-wing populists both in Estonia, and increasingly in other countries Germany, Austria, the U.S.A.? Not because they believe in the ability of radical forces to offer something better, but in the hope that someone will appear to break the existing system. A system that traps the parents, and their children and grandchildren. A system that is increasingly working for the few. For more people to buy their own housing is becoming too expensive. Entrepreneurs have to survive themselves in a world where environmental requirements are increasingly restrictive, but the implementation of environmentally clean solutions is unavailable or exorbitantly expensive. All this is a consequence of the economic system that we have today. Inequality in education is growing, and the success of children is more dependent on the size of the purse of their parents,” Laenemets noted.
