Lauri Lauri Läänemets said at a government press conference on Thursday, that the Department of Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision (TTJA) should analyze the market position of telecommunications company Telia, including that it could consider the division of the company’s defined networks

of communication.

“In my view, TTJA could look at and that in the case Telia is in some way a semi-monopoly position. They own a much more communication networks than other businesses. As a matter of fact we see that there could be problems with this. “As a matter of fact we need to consider this issue and consider whether to separate these networks from this enterprise,” the minister said.

Laenemets clarified that the question doesn’t affect, for example, the company’s network of fiber optic cables, and that he doesn’t think the state should purchase the network of the company. “I didn’t suggest that the state should buy or nationalize something I said that it should be checked. Sometimes the networks or services separate, it’s common in the electricity market, for example, in the service. This kind of behavior on the part of the semi-monopoly company is totally unacceptable. Estonians – are not creepy peasants who should pay a dime to a foreign company, ” – he said.

In addition, he said, the government will check the functioning of all the telecom companies. “This means whether the telecom masts are working when there is a blackout, when there is a widespread power outage, when there is a power outage. As far as we know, not all. Some operate on batteries. But we are talking about 24 hours, 36 hours, in today’s situation, I would say, there is a somewhat weird situation, where profits reach twenty millions euros in a year, but not enough investment so to say in the functioning of Estonia, the functioning of the state, the actions of people in crisis situations”, Läänemets explained.

“If they didn’t want to do this, then the state can implement much more specific rules on how to make their masts work, ” he added.

Minister of Justice Liisa Pakosta criticized the statement of Läänemets, pointing out that the possession of the networks from Telia implies their purchase by the state. “And where would we get the money for this?” – added she.

“When snow is too much, it’s really difficult to put generators next to the base stations.” But it’s all

Pakosta emphasized.
