The Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan has tightened the ban on the import of Russian wheat that was introduced earlier, reports ElDala.kz. Exceptions for the import of grain by mills, feed factories and poultry farms have been abolished. The complete ban on wheat imports will remain in force until the end of 2024.
By order of the Minister of Agriculture, the ban was introduced from August 21. The government explained that the need for such action results from both the high wheat harvest in Kazakhstan and the fact of excessively increasing supplies from Russia.
According to official data, 1.5 million tons of wheat were imported from the Russian Federation in the first half of 2024. This was Kazakhstan's total import in all of 2023. The authorities fear destabilization of the domestic market and want to eliminate the pressure of cheaper Russian grain. However, the ban does not apply to the transit of Russian wheat through Kazakhstan.
