On Saturday evening, the Kalisz fire brigade confirmed the report of dead fish found in the Bernardyński Canal at Stawiszyńska Street in Kalisz.
The Provincial Inspectorate of Environmental Protection and Polish Waters were informed about the incident. A specialist chemical rescue group from Ostrów Wlkp. was called to the site to collect water samples and test them for the presence of substances that may pose a threat to animals or people.
Members of the "Prosna od sources" Association informed the services about the case. Activist Maciej Garbowicz reported on the association's Facebook profile: "Look, fish are dying in the Bernardine Canal. Dead pikes, perches. (…) Hundreds of dead fish. There has been some contamination. The river is simply dying," he said.
He assured that the association would not leave the matter without explanation. "We will demand that the cause of the situation be found and those responsible be punished," he stressed. The police were informed about the case. (PAP)
