In an interview with Äripäev on Thursday, August 15, Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi (Reform Party) proposed taxing the wage fund of employees of companies rather than the profits of companies. Although Ligi hoped that such a proposal would not upset his coalition partners, the Social Democrats have come out strongly against the idea. Party members have been vocal in their comments on social media, sometimes resorting to personal attacks. “So far, no official proposal has been made, and no decision has been made. We need to discuss the advantages and risks,” wrote Jürgen Ligi on social media, commenting on the discussion that erupted after his idea. “I agree with Jürgen Ligi that we have to choose between something bad and something very bad. In this regard, he is absolutely right. However, I think that our finance minister has put forward an ill-considered idea,” entrepreneur and deputy chairman of the Social Democratic Party Lauri Paeveer said in an interview with Delfi.
