John Lewis bolsters home offer with 36 new brands

John Lewis will start stocking dozens of new homeware brands as part of its efforts to “reinvigorate” its shops and win back customers.

The department store chain is preparing to launch up to 36 new lighting, kitchenware and furniture brands this September, including actor Stanley Tucci’s Greenpan range, The Telegraph reported.

The new ranges mean that more than 160 extra manufacturers will have been introduced over the past 12 months, with its homeware, furniture and lighting collection around 15% bigger on last year.

The push comes as executive director Peter Ruis, who joined the retailer in January, has been tasked with reviving John Lewis stores.

Ruis previously told The Times he was keen to add more shop floor staff and is renegotiating contracts with fashion brands so they can pay the department store a lower rate of commission in exchange for getting more employees to work on their concessions.

He is also thought to be focused on significantly increasing the number of own-brand sofas it stocks, with 12 new designs being launched.

John Lewis is also investing in updating homeware concession stands and fixtures, with the business making around 150 improvements across its homeware departments this year such as installing more “shop within shop” concepts where space is given over to specific brands.

The retailer is understood to be spending around £1m alone on overhauling the home department at its flagship store on Oxford Street in London. John Lewis is also set to unveil a new upsized beauty hall at the store later this year too.
