Italy: Farm worker bled to death, farmer accused

Włochy: Pracownik w gospodarstwie wykrwawił się na śmierć, gospodarz oskarżony

A gruesome accident occurred a week ago on a farm in Borgo Santa Maria, south of Rome. An Indian worker died because his employer did not provide him with timely help. The Italian has been arrested and will appear in court, Italian media report.

The worker bled to death

According to ItalianInsider, an Indian worker was working illegally harvesting melons. The host told him to operate a machine for wrapping fruit packed in boxes with foil. The machine pulled the Indian in, severed one of his arms and broke both his legs. However, the employer did not call an ambulance because he was afraid of the consequences for illegally employing immigrants.

Although the injured man was bleeding heavily, the farmer put the seriously injured man in a van along with the severed limb and took him to a settlement where other seasonal workers were accommodated. It wasn't until the roommates called for help and an ambulance arrived for the already unconscious worker. The man was taken to a hospital in Rome, where he died due to excessive blood loss. As a result of the police investigation, the owner of the farm was arrested.

The farmer will be charged with murder

Now the farmer's fate hangs in the balance because the prosecutor's office is considering whether to change the classification of his crime from unintentional to intentional murder. According to the prosecutor, the Indian could still be alive if he had received help in time. Public opinion in Italy demands a severe punishment for the plantation owner, and his father added fuel to the fire by complaining to journalists that the deceased Indian had exposed the farm to losses and problems.

A loud case

The case gained so much publicity that even Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke out and called the farmer's behavior disgusting. In Italy, a public debate has reignited over the mistreatment of seasonal workers. The practice of illegally employing workers through specialized gangs that force immigrants to perform semi-slave work is common in the country. The Italian trade union CGIL estimates that around 230,000 workers are employed without contracts in Italy, mainly in fruit and vegetable harvesting.
