Is kebab becoming more expensive and becoming a luxury dish? The left proposes government subsidies

Kebab drożeje i staje się daniem luksusowym? Lewica proponuje rządowe dopłaty

Kebab price in Germany

Kebab, consisting of thin slices of grilled meat, vegetables and sauces wrapped in a cake, has become almost a symbol of German street cuisine. Unfortunately, the price of this delicacy in many German cities already reaches 10 euros, and the average price is 7.90 euros. For comparison, when converted into Polish zlotys, the cost ranges from PLN 34 to PLN 43. Even with the higher purchasing power of Germans, this is an impressive amount.

Scholz and questions about kebab

As reported by "The Guardian", Chancellor Olaf Scholz was repeatedly asked about the rising prices of kebabs during his public speeches. Young Germans for whom kebab is an everyday meal express their concerns and frustrations. At one such meeting, a young German of Turkish origin asked Scholz to "talk to Putin", pointing out the impact of rising energy prices on food costs, including kebabs.

Increase in kebab prices – reasons

The federal government explained on Instagram that the main reasons for the increase in kebab prices are rising wages and energy prices. The increase in production and maintenance costs of catering establishments translates directly into the final price of kebabs, which is felt by consumers.

The Left's proposal – subsidies for kebabs

The German tabloid "Bild" reports that the left has presented a plan of government subsidies for kebabs, which aims to alleviate the effects of "donerflation". The state would add EUR 3 to each kebab, which would reduce the price to EUR 4.90 per piece. A special offer for students would assume an even lower price – EUR 2.50 per portion. The entire program would cost approximately EUR 4 billion per year.

Kathi Gebel, the left's spokeswoman for youth policy, argues that the state must intervene to prevent food from becoming a luxury good. The Guardian also reminds that Green MP Hanna Steinmüller previously raised this topic, pointing out that for young people it is an issue as important as other everyday problems. Steinmüller emphasized the need to understand and represent different perspectives of voters.
