Since the beginning of July, parents in Sweden have been able to transfer part of their parental leave to the child's grandparents. Sweden is the first country in the world to introduce this welfare state innovation .
The Swedish parliament decided to introduce the innovation reform in December last year following a proposal from the government, Ilta-Lehti reports.
According to the reform, parents can now transfer part of their child care leave to grandparents. If the child has two parents, they can transfer a maximum of 45 days of leave to grandparents. In the case of a single parent, they can transfer up to 90 days of leave to grandparents to care for the child.
A similar reform was previously considered in Finland. According to experts, such a measure would help to more evenly distribute responsibility for caring for small children between parents.
