Two new tools addressed to farmers have appeared on the website agrometeo.imgw.pl run by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
The first is the soil moisture forecast.
The maps show soil moisture forecasts in two layers (7-28 cm and 28-100 cm) for the next 7 days. These forecasts are created using an artificial intelligence model that takes into account previous soil moisture data and temperature and precipitation forecasts prepared by the European Weather Forecasting Center (ECMWF). Additionally, the maps show how reliable the forecast is (very good, good, poor), which is assessed based on the analysis of 50 different forecasts – informs IMGW.

A new tool for farmers on the IMWM website
The second new feature in the weather service addressed to farmers is the forecast of rainfall shortages and excesses.
According to IMGW, periods of shortages are the number of days when there was no rain or when the total rainfall was less than the established threshold. In turn, periods of excess are days when rainfall exceeded the established values. In agriculture, it is important how often days with different amounts of rainfall occur, especially during the vegetation period of plants.
In the Polish climate, droughts caused by a lack of rainfall are one of the most dangerous phenomena for crops. Importantly, small amounts of rain that evaporates quickly do not benefit plants because the water does not have time to soak into the soil. On the other hand, very intense rainfall is also not beneficial, especially on uneven terrain. A large amount of water flows over the surface of the earth, causing soil erosion, and only a small part of the water soaks into the soil.
That is why a product was created that monitors both deficiencies and excesses of precipitation. It takes into account the different needs of plants depending on the season, taking into account both the spring-summer period and the autumn-winter period – informs IMGW.
