The furniture giant declares bankruptcy after 46 years. Liquidation of stores
Ice cream is a very seasonal dessert. Even though they are available all year round, traditionally the peak of their sales begins in May and falls on the warmest period of the year. Ice cream production in Poland has been growing regularly in recent years. In the previous season (from May 2022 to April 2023) y/y sales. increased by 15 percent and amounted to PLN 3.75 billion. However, price increases were responsible for the change. The sales volume remained at a similar level.
However, Polish producers satisfy not only the palates of their compatriots. According to data from the UN Comtrade database, last year Poland with a share of 8.84 percent. took 4th place in global ice cream exports. We have thus overtaken Italy (8.78%) and Spain (8.23%), which are considered the cradle of European ice cream. 2023 was a record year for our producers in terms of exports. Compared to 2022, we recorded a sharp increase of over 51%. By 20.6 percent rdr. The nominal value of Polish ice cream exports also increased and amounted to EUR 345 million.
81.18 percent of exported ice cream goes to Europe, mainly to Germany, France and Great Britain. The remaining, almost ⅕, is exported, among others, to the USA, Australia, Colombia, or such exotic markets as Gambia, Libya and Singapore.
The largest ice-eaters in Europe
It may be surprising that the biggest "ice-eaters" in Europe are the Finns living in the frosty north, who eat 14.3 liters of these delicacies per head per year. Known for their gelato and hot climate, Italians limit themselves to just over 8 liters. However, nothing beats New Zealanders, who serve almost 28.5 liters of ice cream per person every year! Poles fare rather poorly in this ranking. On average, each of us eats 5.7 liters of ice cream a year. However, the good news for producers is that experts predict a significant increase in this value in the coming years.
This will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the industry, which already seems to be successfully making up for the losses caused by the pandemic, increased costs and limited access to raw materials, which forced many manufacturers to raise prices in 2023. According to data from the BIG InfoMonitor Debtor Register and the BIK credit information database, the percentage of overly indebted entities is decreasing and at the end of May this year. was only 3.7 percent. The outstanding debt of ice cream producers also decreased. From PLN 5.4 million in May 2023 to PLN 4.5 million in May this year. The difference was over 17%. When we look at monthly data from last year, the seasonality of the industry is clearly visible, but we can also notice that the post-season increase in outstanding liabilities has lost its dynamics. According to recent data, each unreliable debtor among ice cream producers owes an average of just over PLN 73,000. zloty.
Non-alcoholic beverages market
However, NielsenIQ data shows that the non-alcoholic beverages market is growing and in the 2023 season it exceeded PLN 25 billion. Nearly ⅓ are carbonated drinks, slightly less, 27.7%. mineral water, and less than 20 percent juices and nectars. Energy and isotonic products included in this segment accounted for 16.7% in 2023. market, but this year's change in regulations and restrictions on their sales may significantly affect this result.
A survey conducted by Waterdrop shows that the majority of Poles (65.4%) declare that they most often choose tap or filtered water. The remaining 23.6 percent are more likely to drink from plastic packaging, and 9.3 percent from glass bottles. This translates into the volume of water among all drinks sold, which is approximately 50%.
– Even though Poles' awareness is growing and we are increasingly giving up plastic bottles in favor of reusable solutions, according to estimates, revenues on the non-alcoholic beverage market in Poland will increase by 4.75% by 2028. However, the main reason for the increase in value will be the rising prices of carbonated drinks. At the same time, the expected volume of non-alcoholic beverages will also grow, but at a slower pace, reaching 9.7 billion liters next year and increasing by another 1.7% in 2025. – says Dr. Hab. Waldemar Rogowski, chief analyst at BIG InfoMonitor. – It will be clear in the fall, after the next season, how durable the trend of decreasing outstanding debt among ice cream and non-alcoholic beverage producers is, as recorded in our databases. At the moment, all market participants seem to be in good shape, he sums up.
