However, the EU will tighten limits on thiacloprid residues from imports

UE jednak zaostrzy limity na pozostałości po tiachloprydzie z importu

Recently, the European Parliament blocked the European Commission's proposal to import food with reduced residues of the active substance thiacloprid withdrawn from the European Union. This action outraged many because in the EU this substance has already been withdrawn since 2020, meanwhile products treated with this substance can flow to us. As we wrote on farmer.pl back then, Canada was very much in favor of no changes to the regulations. The EC had to present a new project.

Thiachlopride is a neonocotinoid

We would like to remind you that thiacloprid is a compound from the group of neonicotinoids, a subgroup of chloronicotinyls. Designed to combat sucking and biting pests in crops such as rapeseed (winter and spring) and potato. To combat the rapeseed beetle, the four-toothed beetle and the Colorado potato beetle.

Now what about the leftover thiacloprid?

It turns out that there are new decisions on this matter. According to the Schweizer Bauer website, the maximum permissible levels of residues of this substance for imported raw materials from third countries are to be lowered. Interestingly, as reported, the European Commission's proposal was accepted by the member states.

In the EU, imports from third countries will in future be subject to more stringent residue requirements for thiacloprid, ranging from 0.01 to 0.05 milligrams per kilogram.

As recalled at the beginning of 2023, a similar action occurred against other active substances that were withdrawn in the EU. It's about clothianidin and thiamethoxam. The European Commission then adopted new regulations on lowering the maximum residue levels (MRLs) in food for these two active substances, also from the neonicotinoid group. They apply to all products manufactured in the EU, and ultimately also to imported food and feed. Importantly, time was given to implement the regulations, because in the case of imported products, these regulations will apply from 2026. Will the same apply to thiacloprid?
