Advantages of hybrid barley varieties
Syngenta has Hyvido, i.e. hybrid, winter barley varieties. The important advantages of hybrid barley include higher yield potential, higher protein content in the grain, and better tolerance to unfavorable conditions.
– In the case of hybrids, we are dealing with the heterosis effect, which results in higher yield and higher quality. Plants behave slightly differently in the field: they grow faster in autumn and start quickly in spring – said Łukasz Bojkowski, Marketing Director of the Seed Department of Syngenta, in an interview with farmer.pl.
The 2023/2024 season was difficult for barley, mainly due to virus infections. Łukasz Bojkowski, however, pointed out that hybrid varieties, thanks to their dynamic growth, are able to overcome the effects of the virus faster and develop despite difficult conditions.

Hybrid barley: agrotechnical tips
Hybrid varieties of winter barley require adapted agrotechnics that will allow them to fully exploit their potential. Łukasz Bojkowski pointed out several key differences in the technology of growing hybrid barley compared to traditional varieties:
– In the case of hybrids, we use a much lower sowing rate. Recommendations for our varieties are two bags of seeds per hectare with a unit of 900,000 seeds. We obtain 180 plants per square meter, which is a lower planting density compared to linear varieties. When managing the crop, attention should be paid to early growth regulation in spring. Hybrid barley grows faster than linear varieties, so regulation must also be planned and implemented early enough, advises Łukasz Bojkowski.

Syngenta: portfolio presented in the field. What happened at the S-Class Fields?
New hybrid barley variety for autumn 2024
Syngenta is systematically expanding its offer of winter barley varieties using Hyvido technology. The bestsellers in the autumn 2024 catalog include varieties such as SY Maliboo, SY Dakoota, SY Galileoo. This year, also new among hybrid barleys is SY Loona. It belongs to the dense field varieties. The advantages of the SY Loona variety include its suitability for cultivation in various conditions – from poor to good locations. The new variety is also expected to perform well in conditions of delayed sowing and with less intensive fungicide protection. As Syngenta's advisors declare, SY Loona is able to "escape drought" thanks to its medium early ripening. These features, together with high health, resistance to lodging and stem breakage, and winter hardiness, are intended to ensure the stability of yields of the SY Loona variety.

Next year there will be a variety resistant to the yellow dwarf virus
Łukasz Bojkowski announced that Syngenta is working on introducing a hybrid barley variety with a built-in gene for resistance to the yellow dwarf virus to its portfolio. In Poland, such a variety may appear as early as autumn 2025.
– In the near future, probably next year, we will introduce the first varieties with a built-in gene for resistance to the dwarfism virus. Importantly, this immunity will be built into both components, both maternal and paternal – explains Łukasz Bojkowski.
