“Big agro” pushes in Bolivia

Bolivia for many years has been in the top ponur rankings of the poorest countries on the continentSouth American. The availability of numerical data on the subject of Bolivian agriculture is small. As based on the last census of 2013 year. reports FAOSTAT, the average agricultural farm in Bolivia lots 40 ha.

This average is the result of great diversity at regional level. According to the World Bank publication of 2019 . “Tapping the Potential of Bolivia’s Agriculture and Food Systems to Support Inclusive and Sustainable Growth” in Bolivia in mountain and highland 60 proc. farms counting less than 1 ha of land, with farms in areas more favorable for agricultural production that already only 27 proc. of all farms; there will increase the share of farms above 100 ha.

An interesting perspective on the direction of development of agriculture in this country was presented by Bolivian economist Huascar Salazar Lohman in the weekly “Ojala”.

– 98 percent of food in households in Bolivia comes from small, family farms, called “backward” and “unproductive.” (…) From the other side Bolivian agribusiness produces a huge quantity of goods, based on pillage of extensive territories and the violent economic model. These products are traded in international markets and benefit large capital, whose only purpose is profit, and not the nutrition of people. (…) The Region Santa Cruz, which is mainly from agribusiness, accounts for 75 proc. production of food in all Bolivia, of which most transfers however to export – wrote in “Ojala” Lohman.

True, it seems that corporations from the “big agro” sector are strengthening their position in regions Bolivia with the best conditions for agricultural production. Of the nine departments (equivalent to our provinces) only

three: La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz generate as 72 proc. of the total contribution of agriculture in Bolivia’s

GDP. The dynamic expansion of industrial agriculture is well pictured by the scale of deforestation: in the years 2012-2017

in Bolivia ubstituted on average about. 220 tys. ha of forest per year, a phenomenon that is continuing.

Brazil: gigafarms and farmless

which initially may seem surprising, the average farm area in Brazil according to present by FAOSTAT the agricultural census of 2017 . this is 69 ha. However, one should be aware of the huge dispersion and unbalanced distribution of land in this country. Farms with less than 100 ha (yes, these are defined in Brazil as “small farms”) contain as as 91 percent. of all farms, but they only occupy 20 percent of the country. Large agricultural enterprises, which own are over 1000 ha, are only 1 percent. of all farms, however they occupy nearly half of land in Brazil.

As a interesting factor, we can add, that there are a large number of “farms without land.” In 1984 year in

this country the so-called Movement was established. Movement Farmers without land, which fought for the allocation of land to local farmers, deprived

of land and reduced only to the roles of workers forcibly due to concentration of land and the creation of

huge latfunds. There were loud actions of occupation of unused land by members of the Movement. Till today this organization exists and is opposed to the Movement, among other things. direction of agricultural production in Brazil to export and “hegemony agribusiness”.
