HMV records steep sales boost due to Oasis reunion

HMV has posted a “huge boost” in sales due to the reunion of rock band Oasis after 15 years.

Revenues shot up 526% week on week across the band’s full catalogue, as fans flocked to the music and entertainment retailer following news Oasis would be performing multiple live shows next year.

Sales of Oasis’ debut LP Definitely Maybe rose 443% compared to the previous week, while their albums (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and Knebworth 1996 were up 684% and 209% respectively.

HMV managing director Phil Halliday said: “Oasis are a truly iconic band who have made such a positive impact on British music. Sales figures from the past week, both in store and online, pay testament to their popularity across the nation.”

HMV reopened its iconic Oxford Street flagship in November, following a four year absence from trading.

The central London location is where the retailer opened its first store back in 1921, with the return to its original home dubbed as the final stage of HMV’s “dramatic turnaround” under Doug Putman.

The retailer also saw profits soar earlier this year thanks to resurgence of vinyl.
