The 27-year-old admitted to setting fire to approximately 10 hectares of a field where wheat was growing. He heard the accusation. He has already set fire to a haystack last year. He faces up to 5 years in prison.
A fire in an agricultural field occurred last Thursday (July 25) in the town of Giżewo (Inowrocław County, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship). The fire consumed 10 hectares of wheat. Losses are estimated at PLN 93,000.
It was quickly verified that on that day there were no agricultural machines operating in the burnt field that could have caused the fire, and that the cause was arson.
While arriving at the scene of the fire, the police noticed a 27-year-old man they knew well, riding a bicycle. The man had already set fire to a haystack in Racice. He explained to the uniformed officers that he was going to Kruszwica for a walk and to get ice cream – says Junior Asp. Emil Gawroński from the District Police Headquarters in Inowrocław.
The man was arrested. It turned out that the police knew him well – last year he set fire to straw in the town of Racice. During the ride to the police station, the 27-year-old repeatedly changed his testimony regarding his previous stay and destination.
The arsonist was charged with committing a crime under Article 288 of the Penal Code, to which he pleaded guilty.
