In order to improve road safety, LMT, in cooperation with Jurmala City Council, installed a “smart” traffic light in Majori. It will monitor how road users comply with the rules and transmit information to the police. The smart traffic light is installed at the controlled pedestrian crossing on Lienes Street, opposite the Maiori railway station. It will perform a number of functions: recognize and classify objects, determine their trajectory and location, recognize and read license plates, and identify traffic lights. The solution consists of a specially configured mini-computer, two high-definition video cameras, networking equipment, mounts and software developed by LMT. This technical solution is officially included in the traffic control system. That is, information about drivers who passed through an intersection on a red light will be transmitted by control equipment to the State Road Safety Directorate (CSDD) and the Jurmala Municipal Police, who will decide on the offense and the appropriate punishment. Similar traffic lights are already in operation in Liepaja and Riga. Liepaja became the first city where a “smart” traffic light began operating in March 2023. This decision made it possible to reduce the number of violations in the city by five times (if we compare data for February in 2022 and 2023). Taking into account successful experience, a similar solution was also implemented in the Austrian city of Graz and the capital of Lithuania – Vilnius.
He reads the number and notifies the police. In Jurmala, traffic will be controlled by a “smart” traffic light
