Harrods settling more than 250 claims against ex-owner Al Fayed

Harrods is in the process of settling more than 250 claims for compensation brought by women who allege sexual misconduct by its former owner Mohamed Al Fayed.

The luxury department store told the BBC that the women have come forward since the release of the broadcaster’s documentary last month.

The investigation revealed decades of serious sexual abuse allegations including rape and attempted rape by Al Fayed, who owned Harrods between 1985 and 2010.

The department store’s new owners said they were “appalled” by the claims and that it had “failed our colleagues”. It has been investigating whether any current members of staff were involved since last year.

The retailer told the BBC it would not provide a “running commentary” of its internal review.

Harrods has a compensation scheme for ex-employees who say they were attacked by Al Fayed, which is separate from a legal case against the luxury department store by several different law firms.

Justice for Harrods Survivors group, which represents the accusers of the billionaire, said their lawyers were working with 147 women.

It is unclear whether there is any overlap between those seeking compensation from Harrods and those pursuing legal action.
