Greenpeace wins. Dutch farmers must use o 50 proc. fewer fertilizers

Greenpeace wygrywa. Holenderscy rolnicy muszą używać o 50 proc. mniej nawozów

Ruling the court to the benefit of Greenpeace

Following the next time the decision had to be made by the court, because politicians had not found a solution. This and the topic was the farmers from Holland and the issue of handling the use of nitrogen fertilizers. The environmental protection organization Greenpeace has demanded to reduce this amount and finally filed a lawsuit.

The Court issued a judgment on the benefit of Greenpeace on environmental requirements for farmers using fertilizers. The current government has not announced a policy, on the basis that could with scientific confidence assume, that the legal objective for the year 2030 will be achieved – said Judge Luiten. The government has been forced to take more rigorous measures for the purpose of protecting nature. As has denied, the more so, that the farmers (BBB) is part of the government.

Greenpeace believes, that the judgment benefits farmers

Greenpeace is satisfied with the judgment and sees benefits for farmers as well. The Ruling in Holland in finally clarifies the situation. The Dutch state has repeatedly not supported farmers, not protected their crops and at the same time not protected the nature accordingly. The ruling this in finally provided safety for agriculture.

The organization from old has called for more involvement in reduction of nitrogen. The non-government organization has collected over 100 000 signatures in favor of sustainable agriculture and submitted them to the relevant parliamentary committee.

Position of farmers

Such position is not necessarily well received in rural areas. The Netherlands is a significant exporter of agricultural products. And this has its price: the environment is partly strongly polluted with nitrogen emissions. The main cause of emissions of ammonia is considered by breeding animals.

Farmers from countries see, that their work is regarded and are worried about their future. Many are concerned about the tightening of regulations to protect the environment. They are concerned about their existence and plants, if they are not able to carry them sufficiently. Not therefore surprising, that in the past farmers often, and sometimes even violently protested against regulations on carriages and stricter regulations. They want to wait and to see, what effect the rule will have.

Reducing emissions minimum by 50 percent

The rule is not appearing out of nowhere. Already in May 2019 the highest Dutch administrative court ruled, that theThe previous practice of compensating emissions of nitrogen violated the EU directive. Now the Holland government has been forced to take more rigorous measures for the purpose of protecting nature. The ruling imposes on the

state an obligation to reduce emissions in nature reserves by at least 50 percent by

the end 2030 year.

Premier Dick Schoof announced then appointed a ministerial committee

for

the purpose of developing solutions. Ger Koopman, chairman of the group of interests LTO, appealed to the government

to revoke the judgment, pointing to distant consequences for the agricultural, housing and Dutch economy.
