
Low harvest and quality and apreciation of fund
In the current season, to November total, Great Britain imported 1,45 million tons of wheat, which stands as the highest quantity since the start of electronic records in the season 1995/1996. Only in November the quantity was 295 000 ton, that is by 71 proc. more than in this same month last year and twice more than the average of five years.
As reported by the British Development Agriculture and Horticulture (AHDB),The high level of imports is due to low domestic harvest and problems with the quality of domestic grain. Additional to this is the appreciation of the pound against the euro.
Most wheat from Germany and Canada
According to the latest trade estimates, this year’s wheat harvest in Great Britain was only 11.4 million tons. For comparison, in the previous year over 13.9 million tons of wheat was harvested.
In the report period a significant part of British imports of wheat came from Germany and Canada, approximately 530 000 ton and 235 000 ton, respectively. According AHDB, this was probably wheat for milling. Analysts from the organization in charge of promoting trade predict, that in the 2024/2025 season there will be imported a total of 2.75 million tons of wheat; That would be by 13 proc. more than in the season 2023/2024.
In the first five months of the current campaign from the Great Britain were exported slightly
less than 52 000 tons of wheat, which means a decrease by 62 perc. in
ratio to from the 2023/2024 season and by 84 proc. in ratio to the
five-year average.
