Great Britain: less and less organic milk on the market, farmers are returning to conventional production

Wielka Brytania: coraz mniej mleka organicznego na rynku, hodowcy wracają do produkcji konwencjonalnej

According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), UK organic milk production was 1.1 million liters a day in May, down almost 10 percent on the same month last year. In the 2023–2024 marketing year, organic milk production decreased by as much as 14% compared to the previous year.

According to AHDB, organic milk production has declined significantly mainly due to weaker consumer demand resulting from rising costs of living. As a result, many organic farmers could not count on an appropriately higher rate for milk. Although a premium is paid for organic production, it is not sufficient in the opinion of breeders. High production costs and shrinking profit margins have already prompted many farmers to return to conventional production.

Retail sales of organic products in the UK also saw a decline of several percent over the past year, according to data from Nielsen, which tracks purchasing trends. Now it seems that the situation is slowly turning around, but rebuilding the previous volume is unlikely to be possible because the economic situation does not bode well.
