According to Statistics Estonia, 49.6 million passengers used land transport of Estonian companies in the second quarter of 2024, which is almost the same as in the same quarter last year. 40.9 million passengers used buses and 2.1 million used trains. There were 1% more trips made on both modes of transport than in the second quarter of last year. The number of trips made on trams and trolleybuses decreased. Piret Pukk, Head of the Energy, Transport, IT and Accommodation Statistics Group at Statistics Estonia, said that in the second quarter, most trips were still made on urban routes, where the number of passengers on buses, trams and trolleybuses totalled 39.4 million. "Overall, there were 9% fewer trips made on trams and trolleybuses. This was probably due to the shortening and cancellation of some tram routes in the capital due to the construction work of the Vanasadam tram line and the Tondi railway crossing. “Buses were used 32.8 million times, the number of passengers on city routes has increased by 1% compared to the same quarter last year,” Piret Pukk specified. County and rural municipality routes were used 6 million times, which is 1% more than in the second quarter of 2023 (5.9 million passengers). At the same time, the number of passengers on domestic intercity routes was 2% less than in the same quarter last year (775,700 times). Piret Pukk noted that the number of passengers in the second quarter increased both on international route and international charter services. “In the second quarter, buses were used on international route services of Estonian companies 304,100 times, i.e. 41% more than in the same period of 2023. “In the framework of irregular, i.e. chartered, transportation, over 1 million passengers were transported by buses during the same period, of which 934,100 passengers (1% less than last year) were in domestic transportation and 135,100 passengers (61% more than last year) were in international transportation,” explained Piret Pukk. Passenger turnover is the volume of work done in passenger transportation, which is measured in passenger-kilometres (pkm). One passenger-kilometre corresponds to the movement of one passenger over a distance of one kilometre. In the second quarter, the passenger turnover of horse-drawn transport amounted to 735 million pkm, which is 9% less than in the same period last year. Of these, 175 million pkm were travelled on city routes (including 151.6 million pkm on buses). The volume of transportation on domestic intercity routes amounted to 110.5 million pkm, and on county and volost routes — 101 million pkm. In the second quarter, the passenger turnover of international bus routes amounted to 105 million pkm, increasing by one fifth over the year. The passenger turnover of irregular transportation amounted to 143.9 million pkm. The number of passenger trains used in the second quarter was the same as last year: then 2.1 million trips were made by trains. The passenger turnover amounted to 99.6 million pkm, which is 8% less than last year. Read RusDelfi wherever it is convenient for you. Follow us on Facebook, Telegram, Instagram and even TikTok.
